Your internet service provider delivers the connection. But between the fibre box on the wall and the Teams call on your screen, there is a gap that most ISPs do not cover. Your router needs to be configured. Your network needs to handle the traffic. Quality of Service settings need to prioritise voice and video. And when something breaks, you need someone who can tell you whether the problem is your ISP or your office network.
That is the gap TechCloud fills. Choosing the right ISP, coordinating the installation, configuring your network equipment, and making sure your internet connection actually supports the cloud services your business depends on. Not as an ISP selling bandwidth or fibre packages, but as the IT partner that makes sure your connectivity works for your business.
Why Choosing the Right ISP Matters More Than You Think
Not all fibre packages are equal, and the cheapest option is rarely the best fit for a business that depends on cloud services. The differences are not always obvious until something goes wrong.
- Business vs residential fibre. A residential fibre package is designed for streaming and browsing. A business package typically includes a service level agreement (SLA) with guaranteed uptime, faster fault response times, and lower contention ratios. If your team relies on Teams calls and cloud backups running throughout the day, a residential package with a 10:1 contention ratio will struggle during peak hours when your neighbours are also online.
- Contention and speed. The speed on your fibre package is shared. A 100Mbps line with a 10:1 contention ratio means you might only get 10Mbps during peak usage. Business packages typically offer 3:1 or even 1:1 contention, meaning you get closer to the advertised speed when it matters.
- Support tiers. When your internet goes down at 9am on a Monday, the response you get depends on your ISP and your package. Some ISPs offer dedicated account managers for business clients. Others route you through the same support queue as residential customers. The difference between a 4-hour fix and a 48-hour ticket matters when your team cannot access email, files, or phone calls.
- ISP vs FNO. In South Africa, the company that sells you fibre (your ISP) is usually not the company that owns the cable in the ground (the Fibre Network Operator, or FNO). Vumatel, Openserve, MetroFibre, Frogfoot, and Octotel build and maintain the physical network. Your ISP runs your service over that network. When something breaks, knowing who to call and what to escalate is half the battle.
TechCloud helps you navigate these decisions. We assess your business requirements (number of users, cloud services, VoIP needs) and recommend the right combination of ISP, package, and FNO coverage for your location.
How TechCloud Helps With Connectivity
TechCloud is not an ISP. We do not sell bandwidth, install fibre lines, or manage network infrastructure. What we do is act as the bridge between your business and your internet service provider. This means:
- ISP selection advisory. We assess your needs (staff count, cloud services, VoIP, video conferencing load) and recommend an ISP and package that fits. We know which ISPs perform well on which FNO networks in the Johannesburg and Gauteng area, and we can advise on options nationally.
- Installation coordination. We handle the timeline between the FNO survey, the fibre installation, and the ISP activation. For businesses moving to a new office, we coordinate the connectivity installation alongside the network and cabling setup so everything is ready on day one.
- Router and firewall configuration. Once the fibre is active, your ISP provides a connection. TechCloud configures your router, sets up firewall rules, configures DNS, and ensures your network equipment is optimised for your specific usage. This includes Quality of Service settings that prioritise voice and video traffic over background downloads and cloud backups.
- Cloud readiness verification. Before your team starts using the connection, we verify that it can handle your workload. We test for bandwidth, latency, jitter, and packet loss, the factors that determine whether your Teams calls will be clear or whether your VoIP handsets will drop audio. For detail on what cloud services require from your network, see our Microsoft 365 solutions page.
- Single point of contact. When something goes wrong, you call TechCloud. We diagnose whether the issue is your ISP, your network equipment, or something in between. We escalate to the ISP with the technical detail they need to act, rather than leaving you in a support queue describing the problem from scratch.
- Proactive visibility for managed clients. The business-grade equipment we deploy gives us real-time visibility into your network health, bandwidth usage, and connection quality. For managed IT support clients, this means we regularly review your network health and often catch connectivity issues before they affect your team. If your internet degrades or a device starts consuming excessive bandwidth, we see it and act on it.
If your business also needs cabling, WiFi, and network infrastructure, see our network and WiFi services page. Connectivity and networking work together, and TechCloud handles both.
What Happens After the Fibre Is Installed
The ISP technician activates your fibre line and hands you a connection. That is where their job ends and ours begins.
- Router configuration. We configure your business router (not the ISP-supplied consumer unit) with the correct VLAN tagging, PPPoE credentials, MTU settings, and DNS. For businesses with multiple networks (staff, guest, VoIP), we configure the routing between them.
- Speed and quality testing. We run throughput tests at different times of day to verify you are getting the speed you are paying for. We also measure latency, jitter, and packet loss to confirm the connection is suitable for real-time services like Teams and VoIP.
- QoS configuration. We set up Quality of Service on your router and switch so that voice and video traffic always gets priority. This prevents a large OneDrive sync or cloud backup from degrading your call quality.
- Failover planning. If your business cannot afford downtime when the fibre goes out, we help you set up a secondary connection (typically LTE) as a fallback. The router switches over automatically when the primary connection drops, and switches back when it recovers.
Once everything is tested and running, we document the setup so it can be maintained and troubleshot in the future. If you are a managed IT support client, connectivity health checks and troubleshooting are part of your managed support.
When Things Go Wrong
Internet problems are frustrating because it is rarely clear what is causing them. Is it your ISP? Your router? Your WiFi? Your laptop? TechCloud diagnoses the issue and tells you exactly where the problem sits. For managed IT clients, the business-grade equipment in your network gives us real-time data on connection health, device usage, and traffic patterns. During routine health checks on your account, we often catch early signs of degradation and resolve them before they become a problem your team notices.
Common scenarios we handle:
- Slow internet but the line tests fine. Usually a network configuration issue. An overloaded WiFi access point, a switch bottleneck, or QoS settings that are not prioritising the right traffic. We diagnose and fix.
- Teams calls dropping or breaking up. Could be jitter on the ISP line, could be a WiFi interference issue, could be a QoS problem. We test the connection quality at each point in the chain and identify the cause.
- Internet down completely. We check whether the issue is the fibre line (ISP/FNO), the router, or the network. If it is the ISP, we escalate with the diagnostic information they need to fix it fast. If it is your equipment, we fix it directly.
- Intermittent connectivity. The hardest to diagnose. We set up monitoring to capture the pattern, then trace it to the root cause, whether that is an ISP routing issue, a failing cable, or a device flooding the network.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does TechCloud sell fibre or internet packages?
No. TechCloud is not an internet service provider. We help you choose the right ISP and package based on your business needs, coordinate the installation, and configure your network to work with the service. You contract directly with the ISP for your bandwidth.
What is the difference between an ISP and an FNO?
The FNO (Fibre Network Operator) builds and maintains the physical fibre cable to your premises. Companies like Vumatel, Openserve, MetroFibre, and Frogfoot are FNOs. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) runs your internet service over the FNO's network. When you sign up for fibre, you choose both a network (depending on what is available at your address) and an ISP to deliver the service.
Should I get a business or residential fibre package?
If your business depends on cloud services like Microsoft 365, Teams, or VoIP, a business package is strongly recommended. Business packages offer lower contention ratios (meaning more consistent speeds), SLA-backed uptime guarantees, and faster support response times. The monthly cost is higher, but the reliability difference is significant when your revenue depends on staying connected.
What happens if my fibre goes down?
If you are a managed IT client, you call TechCloud. We diagnose whether the issue is the fibre line, your router, or your internal network. If the problem is with the ISP or FNO, we escalate with the technical detail they need to act quickly. If you have a failover connection (LTE backup), your network switches over automatically while the primary line is being restored. For more on keeping your business running through power and connectivity disruptions, read our guide to cloud resilience.
Can you help me switch ISPs?
Yes. We assess your current setup, recommend a replacement ISP based on your requirements, coordinate the transition so there is minimal downtime, and reconfigure your network equipment for the new service. We also handle the FNO migration if you are changing fibre networks.
Do I need a separate router from the one my ISP provides?
For most businesses, yes. ISP-supplied routers are typically consumer-grade devices with limited configuration options. A business router gives you proper firewall rules, VLAN support, QoS configuration, VPN capability, and the ability to manage multiple networks (staff, guest, VoIP). Critically, business-grade equipment also provides real-time network visibility: you can see which devices are consuming your bandwidth and how much. If a device is streaming video and degrading call quality for the rest of the office, we can identify it immediately and apply traffic rules to keep business services running smoothly. Consumer routers simply cannot do this. TechCloud recommends and configures a router appropriate to your business needs.
How do I know if my internet is fast enough for cloud services?
Speed alone does not determine whether your connection can handle cloud workloads. Latency, jitter, and packet loss matter just as much, especially for real-time services like Teams video calls and VoIP. TechCloud tests all of these factors and advises whether your current connection meets the requirements for your specific cloud services.
